1962 Ginetta G4
1962 Ginetta G4 – $65,000 including spares
A fine example of the timeless Ginetta, whose history stretches from British kit cars and club racing to the current G50 production car and Genetta Zytec LMP racer for Le Mans and the ALMS.
History
Ginetta, a British manufacturer in spite of its Italian-sounding name, built a series of beautiful sports racing cars from 1958 to 1989 with various engines. A successor company continues to build contemporary sports and racing cars and supports multiple one-make championships in the UK.
The G4 model was unveiled at the London Racing Car Show in 1961 and is still perhaps the best-known Ginetta, reintroduced in the 1980s as the updated G27. The G4 was designed and built for the club racer who wanted a cost-effective weekday road car and a weekend racer. The G4 was powered by Ford’s 105E Kent engine, giving it the necessary performance to beat the MGBs and Triumphs it was most closely matched with, and even faster, more expensive cars like the 3.8 liter Jaguar XK-E on occasion.
Ginettas were originally offered as both kits and completed cars, typical of the day. Ginetta’s racing success led to attention from the motoring press and the reputation of these cars quickly transcended their simple origins.
The G4 initially utilized Ford’s 105E engine in a chassis designed to utilize coil springs at the front and a Ford live rear axle. Bodies were constructed from GRP (fiberglass). A coupe version was introduced alongside the open car in 1963. In 1964 the G10 and G11 were added, powered by the 4.7 liter Ford V-8 and MGB 4-cylinder respectively.
The G4 remained in production with various refinements and production interruptions until 1989. Ginetta was reorganized on several occasions and is currently owned by LNT Group, who continue to produce the Ginetta G50 honoring the marque’s 50th anniversary in 2008, and various race cars including the Ginetta Zytek for LMP1 and LMP2 competition in the ALMS and the 24Hours of Le Mans. Vintage Ginettas enjoy comprehensive support from both LNT-owned Ginetta Cars and Ginetta Heritage.
