History

Colin Chapman’s legendary ability to introduce innovative ideas in chassis and suspension design was realized in the Lotus Mark 6. He incorporated load-bearing structures into a lightweight, but extremely strong multi-tube space-frame chassis with high torsional resistance. This design was incorporated into all of Lotus’ highly successful race cars until the introduction of the Lotus 25 monocoque.
The Lotus 7, arguably the most enjoyable sports car ever built, was introduced at the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1957. Chapman’s intent was to manufacture a car with superb road handling and performance, which would eclipse that of other contemporary sports cars. If anything, he underestimated the success of the Lotus 7 and the passion it would generate among enthusiasts; this car could be driven to the track, raced successfully and then driven home.
