1937 Ford Woodie Wagon

A chance to own an unmolested Ford Woodie, this is a great piece of American history that would look great on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket or the Berkshires.

History

Prior to World War I, woodies were the worker bees on the streets of American cities. Originally called depot hacks, their popularity spread and they soon became known by a more pleasing, though less imaginative name: station wagon.

They were usually the priciest model in a car maker’s line and came to be associated with private estates, country clubs, dude ranches or a showy accessory to the gentleman sportsman.

By the 1950s, America was into a new era of chrome, fins and tri-colored, sputnik-inspired automobile styling. Woodies were “old crates” and many were turned into storage containers, chicken coops, or, worse yet, kindling.

Things were looking grim for these once-grand wagons when, in the early 1960s, a savior appeared. A tribe of saviors would be more accurate. Along the West Coast, surfing was spreading like the annual Southern California wildfires. With surfboards to haul and room in the back to crash, it was only a matter of time before these cars were discovered by surfers. California’s climate had been kind to them and, available for next to nothing, they soon began appearing at surf spots up and down the coast. A counter-culture status symbol, square parents could only guess at what went on in the back of these paneled and curtained wagons. Surfers celebrated woodies in songs, movies and legends. They turned them into an icon in California culture, forever tying them to a lifestyle that’s hang-loose, fun and irreverent.

Provenance:

Number 7903413 is an example of a well-cared-for older restoration.  The mechanicals have been superbly cared for and the car still has all three rows of seats, which is unusual. In fact, it starts flawlessly every time with a quick push of the button. The car runs and drives as it should. This is a great piece of American history that would look great on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket or the Berkshires.  A chance to own an unmolested Ford Woodie.
