History

Porsche is famous for the careful development of its automobiles, so it is no surprise that the ever-evolving 356 models were highly developed and sophisticated automobiles for their time. Any shortcomings in design and execution were constantly being identified, analyzed and eliminated.

The Porsche horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine was as close to bulletproof as Teutonic determination could make it. Rear suspension revisions, long since refined and perfected, had rendered the 356’s handling characteristics nearly ideal. Construction had matured until fit, finish and function set the standard to which other manufacturers strived. The production Porsches existed in parallel with their racing counterparts, always benefiting from innovations, but pursuing their own course toward meeting and exceeding the expectations of customers.

The evolution of the Porsche 356 was swift, impelled not only by Porsche’s drive for technical improvement, but also by the realities of commercial success. Sales outstripped even Porsche’s most optimistic forecasts and, with increased sales, came opportunities to build more and more of the 356 in-house, as well to expand the model range. After a decade of international appeal and successful sales, the 356B, successor to the pioneer generation of production Porsches, was introduced in Frankfurt in late 1959. The 356B (T6 body) for the 1962 model year was introduced in September of 1961 and had significant changes. It displayed twin air-intake grilles in the rear lid, an outside gas filler in the right front fender, a new cowl vent, and a flattened lower edge of the front lid. What’s more, the battery was repositioned and an optional gasoline heater nestled in its place.

Among other changes, a new fresh air system was incorporated for occupants and the Porsche transmissions were available in numerous gear ratios. By 1963, the ‘Super’ variant benefited from an additional 20 horsepower over its standard 1,582cc engine and was available in both coupe and cabriolet form

This example offered has been preserved and maintained by Automotive Restorations Inc. Recently, a complete mechanical service was performed while the convertible top was replaced. It is a numbers-matching car, as documented by Porsche. The vehicle runs and drives as it should. This is a great driver and will make a good addition to anyone’s collection or to the casual driver.
